Whiteout copyBetter Late Than Never

I dropped the information for our 3 tax returns at the accountant today.  I predict it will take him a week to get them done.  It will only take him a few minutes to do them and submit them on line but he is flooded with business at this time of year and we were very late getting our stuff together.  Actually just one of us was very late getting our stuff together (right younger son).

My father did his own return online and had his refund in 10 days.  I wonder how long ours will take?  I just hope my return is big enough to cover the amount I have to pay the accountant ($200 plus HST).

Renewing Your Government Cards Is Not That Hard

I had to get a new health card, driver’s license and car license sticker  this week.  Health cards are free, the driver’s license is $80 for 5 years and the license plate sticker is $90 for 1 year.  All you have to do is fill out the forms the provincial government sends you and take in the supporting documents.  Easy right?

Nope.  I was in line between lots of people who didn’t know they had to have their car insurance information entered on the form or that they needed other identification, not just their soon to expire health card, to get a new health card.  The government spends a lot of money on all the papers they send us but it appears most people don’t read them.

There were a lot of people in the 40 plus age bracket and that means that all their identification has expired several times and they have been through this all before.  Instead of being organized the chose to argue with the staff.    Accept that you have screwed up, go and get all your papers together and then come back and smile instead of argue.  I was organized and polite and the clerk helping me didn’t think I would be happy with the first photo she took for my health card so she decided to take one that I would like better.

Spring.  What’s That?

It is snowing again.  I am refusing to shovel it again.

Silver Plate Is Only Valuable If You Have A Truck Full Of  It

I have several cupboards full of completely tarnished silver that came from my fraternal grandmother.  I am the custodian of these items and will pass them, still covered in tarnish, to the next generation.   There are 3 chaffing dishes that are missing the glass containers that fit in the silver rings.   I decided to haul them down to a local buyer of gold and silver in hopes of making a little money off of  these useless things.

I should have know better.  My grandparents, both sides, were  very low income for their entire lives.   I don’t know why I thought that they would be in possession of sterling silver.   The silver buyer confirmed that 2 were silver plate and 1 was some sort of nickel plate.  He told me that if they had been sterling silver that they would have been worth about $400.  He said if I had a truck load of silver plate I might make a few dollars at the scrap metal dealer.

I wonder if I clean them if I could get a few dollars for them at my upcoming yard sale?

I Am A Twit

I have signed up for Twitter as jane savers. I wanted to sign up as Solving The Money Puzzle but that was denied.  I will attempt to post a link but if you send me your name I will follow you if I can figure out how to do that.  My handle, I know this isn’t a CB radio but I am not up on the jargon, seems to be @janesavers.

Then I have to figure out what to say that is pithy and less than 140 characters.

Yay! Congratulations! I’m following you on Twitter. You can link this site to Twitter so that whenever you post a new post, a link to it shows up on Twitter. It will even show a summary of the start of your post and a picture if the person expands on “View Summary”. That’s more than 140 characters ay?

I also need a Twit pic instead of an egg I guess. I am more a writer than a techy and it takes me a long while to tackle these dreaded projects

  2. You’ll get the handle of twitter. It’s really easy, I swear :) I’m still no expert, but it’s a great way to get the word out about your new posts.

I sold gold at one of those shows a few years ago, and wish I had waited a year or more when gold had gone even higher. Ah well, hindsight….

Speaking of spring,… the entire province is shut down for a blizzard. Dropped out of nowhere (well, not “nowhere”, it has been forecasted since last week) and is falling fast.

I am watching the weather from Canada’s east coast and you are getting slammed. The weather guy says we may get a huge dump of rain in my part of Ontario tomorrow and with all this snow and the frozen ground we may have flooding.

Twitter seems like just more computer technical work when I would just rather write. If I am going to run this as a business and not just my hobby than I have to suck it up and master the tech stuff.

  3. Hey, if you’re a twit, we’re all twits! =)

I’ll find you on Twitter and follow =)
